under the weather lately
I’ve been sleeping in the guest room
and letting my old black dog
sleep on the bed all night

his muzzle is going gray
and he seems to appreciate
the softness on his old bones

in the mornings, when I slip out of bed
he cracks open one eye 
to see if I’m going to chase him off

there was a time in my life
when I’d leave a beautiful, five-foot-tall 
brunette asleep in my bed

both are warm

both hog the bed
